TURNING HEALTHCARE ATTENTION INTO PERFORMANCE: XMED’S WORK

During last weeks, the online press reported the fact that the United States Department of Justice is examining the role of the American colossus Olympus (world leader in the field of Endoscopy) in cases of infections related to the use of their duodenoscopes. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been isolated in patients who have undergone endoscopy and several deaths are hypothesised not only in the United States.

The transmission of infections seems to be connected to the device’s closed-channel design, which makes it difficult to clean and sterilise, leaving the potential for bacteria to be trapped and then transmitted from patient to patient. Olympus is already working on a new design; the same attention has been requested by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to other endoscope manufacturers too.
